Attractions and Events

There is a wealth of events happening in England all-year-round. Such festivals and special events celebrated monthly. Most of these celebrations are centuries old. They showcase the cultures and belief of the English people. Of the various festivities, those that attract the greatest attention are the classic sporting events (like FA Cup Final and the Grand National), street parties in London, Promenade concerts, jamborees in the Edinburgh and Welsch National festivals.

Getting tickets for a major sporting event in England is a difficult endeavor. Nevertheless nothing beats the feeling of watching your favorite sport live in the stadiums. Between February and March, we have the rugby tournament participated by six nations in Europe namely Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland, France and Italy. Approximately at the end of March or early April is the University Boat Race held on Thames and participated by teams from Oxford and Cambridge. In May, we flock to the stadiums for the English FA Cup Final and the Scottish FA Cup final in Glasgow. By June, the Wimbledon tennis tournament will begin. In mid-July, the British Open Golf Championship will be held.

The bustling city of London is the venue for the craziest and hippest street parties. The Notting Hill Carnival held every August attracts many tourists across the globe. This event features participants dancing in the streets dressed in colorful costumes.

England is also bursting with eccentric events and festivals such as Mayor Weighing, Swan Upping, pancake races, marbles championship, garlic festival, Bognor Birdman and the World’s Biggest Liar Competition. So if you are itching to watch and even participate in something out-of-the ordinary England is definitely the place to be.

The ‘mayor weighing’ event is held every May in High Wycombe. It is the populace’s why of checking the accountability of the mayor they have voted by seeing whether that person have gained weight by indulging the resources of the community. The Swan Upping tradition is held in July between Sunbury and Abingon.

Shrove Tuesday is considered the Olney Pancake Race day. This tradition dates back on 1445 when participants run a 415-yard dash tossing the pancakes as they run. Good Friday in England is the World Marbles Championship participated by international delegates and players. In the Isle of Wight, the people celebrate the Garlic Festival where products made of garlic are sold in the streets. Bognor Birdman is a silly festival where individuals try to fly using human powered flying machines. Lastly, the World’s Biggest Liar Competition is a contest that seeks the best liar from near and far.
